Convoy for a Cure – USA Unites Truckers to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

By Sherri Middleton
Convoy for a Cure - USA, a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness to fight breast cancer, hosted it’s first fundraising event for truck drivers, friends and family in which all proceeds collected are donated to breast cancer research. Participating truck drivers convoy for one hour, with Convoy for a Cure - USA's all-female convoy taking the lead.
“Breast cancer touches the lives of everyone -- whether it is a friend, family member or even a co-worker," said Cindy Stowe, United States Coordinator,
Convoy for a Cure - USA. “In light of October being National Breast Cancer awareness month, we're thrilled to organize the first ever Convoy for a Cure -
USA event, aimed at driving out breast cancer -- one truck at a time!”
The event raised approximately $13,000 with donations still coming in.
The convoy event was held in Carl’s Corner, Texas at Willie’s Place, the legendary truckstop owned by Willie Nelson. Drivers convoyed on a 20-mile route that took them an hour to complete. The first convoy was the all-female driver trucks, followed by a secondary convoy of company vehicles and supporters. More than 50 people registered for the event that also included informational seminars, entertainment and a Texas barbecue meal. Four bands performed and entertained the crowds.
Stowe said FedEx Freight won the trophy for the most trucks to participate, with seven trucks and drivers. Other corporate sponsors also participated.
Convoy for a Cure - USA accepts online payments via Obopay, a payment platform that enables users to send money via their mobile phones. Using Obopay to collect money for a cause is free for the charity. Obopay also enables people to send and receive money from anywhere so it is a good fit for Convoy for a Cure whose members don't always have easy access to a PC while driving around the country. For more information on Obopay mobile payment solutions, please visit www.obopay.com
Convoy for a Cure - USA is the American version of Convoy for a Cure. Convoy for a Cure was founded by Rachele Champagne in 2008. Champagne spearheaded the first all-female convoy in Canada, raising $15,000 for breast cancer.
This year’s events generated about $100,000 total in donations. For more information, visit www.convoyforacure.usa.com.
